Why this won
Laptop reviews are dominated by benchmark charts, and benchmark charts are a poor guide to whether a machine is nice to own. The things that decide that — heat, noise, battery behaviour at 40% charge, how the trackpad feels at 11pm — do not chart well.
The Air wins on all of them. It is not the fastest machine in this comparison and it does not need to be, because for the work most people do, the bottleneck has not been the processor since about 2020.

The bottom line
Buy the Air with upgraded storage. If you need Windows, buy the ThinkPad on sale, which is to say buy it on any day ending in a 'y'.
