Why this won
Active noise cancellation is a solved problem at the top of the market, which is why the interesting question has stopped being 'how quiet' and started being 'how quiet without ruining the music'. Cancellation works by generating an inverse waveform; do it aggressively enough and you start hollowing out the thing you are listening to.
Sony's answer is the best-balanced one on sale. On a plane the difference between these and the Bose is a small amount of residual engine rumble. The difference in how an album sounds over four hours is much larger, and it runs the other way.
What the specs actually mean
| Spec | Figure | What it actually means |
|---|---|---|
| ANC depth (low frequency) | ~38 dB at 100Hz | This is the range that matters — engines, HVAC, road noise. Above 1kHz, ANC does almost nothing and the earcup seal does the work. |
| Battery, ANC on | ~30 hours | The difference between a weekly charge and a daily anxiety. Below about 20 hours you will be caught out. |
| Multipoint | 2 devices | Laptop call comes in while your phone is playing music and it just switches. Sounds trivial; is the single most-used feature. |
| Weight | 254 g | Anything over about 300g becomes noticeable in hour three. This is comfortably under. |

Who should not buy them
Over-ear headphones and exercise are a bad marriage. If the primary use is the gym, you want in-ears with a hook or a wing, and none of the products in this guide qualify. We will write that guide; we have not written it yet, and we are not going to fudge this one to cover it.
The rest of the field
How we decided
- 01Low-frequency cancellation, from published independent measurements.
- 02Sound quality with ANC engaged, which is the only mode most people ever use.
- 03Comfort over a four-hour session, assessed hands-on.
- 04Multipoint reliability across a laptop and a phone.
- 05Software obnoxiousness, which we now weight explicitly.
Sony loaned a review unit for two weeks and it went back. They did not see this guide before publication and had no input into it.
The bottom line
Buy the Sony. If your only goal is silence, buy the Bose. If your goal is to spend under $200 and never think about it, buy the Soundcore, which is close enough that most people would not pass a blind test.

Bose QuietComfort Ultra (2nd gen)Sony WH-1000XM6WhyWe had optimised for measured cancellation depth rather than for the experience of wearing them for four hours, which is the actual use case.
The Bose is still the pick if silence is the only goal. We should have said that the first time.
