The Best Office Chair

You sit in it for two thousand hours a year. This is not the place to economise, and it is also not the place to spend $1,800.

Steelcase

Steelcase Series 2

$749Best for most people

Tucker says

The chair you buy when you have finally accepted that you sit down for a living.

Why it wins

  • A twelve-year warranty that the second-hand market proves is not a bluff.
  • Adjustment ranges that fit most bodies without a fitting appointment.
  • Parts are available, which means this is a repairable object rather than a disposable one.

The catch

The armrests are merely adequate, and on a chair at this price that is a genuine annoyance.

Buy it if

  • You work from home more than two days a week.
  • You want to buy one chair this decade.

Skip it if

  • You are over 6'4" or under 5'2", where the fit gets marginal — try before you buy.
  • You can get a refurbished Aeron for similar money, which happens more often than you'd think.

Where to buy

Price sheet · checked by hand

Live merchant destinations. The retailer page is authoritative for price and stock; automated observations never change an editorial verdict without human approval.

Why this won

Office chairs are sold on ergonomics language and bought on price, and the gap between those two things is where most of the disappointment in this category lives. A $200 chair with 'lumbar support' printed on the box has a lump of foam in it. A good chair has a mechanism that moves with you.

The bottom line

Buy the Series 2 new, or an Aeron refurbished. Do not buy a $250 mesh chair with a gaming logo on it, whatever the review score says.

Buy the MacBook Air unless you have a specific, articulable reason not to. 'I don't like Apple' is a reason. It is just not a technical one.
