Hisense U7Q 75": The Cheap Big Television, Assessed Honestly

Eight hundred dollars for seventy-five inches. We looked hard for the catch, and we found several. It is still a reasonable purchase.

$798Best cheap big screen

Tucker says

It is not a good television. It is an astonishing amount of television, which is a different and occasionally more useful thing.

Why it wins

  • Seventy-five inches for the price of a mid-range phone changes what you watch and how.
  • Bright enough for a daytime room, which is where cheap sets usually collapse.
  • Gaming features that were flagship-only three years ago.

The catch

Blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds, viewing angles that punish the second sofa, and sound you will want to replace immediately.

Buy it if

  • You want scale more than you want precision.
  • The room is bright and the alternative is a smaller screen.

Skip it if

  • You watch films in a dark room and care about black levels. Buy less television, better.

Where the money was saved

Nobody sells a 75-inch television for $798 without deciding what to leave out. Here it is the local dimming zone count, the panel's off-angle behaviour, and the speakers — in that order of consequence.

The dimming zones matter in the evening: a bright object on a dark field gets a visible halo. Whether this ruins the set depends entirely on what you watch. Sport in a lit room: irrelevant. A submarine film at 11pm: distracting.

The bottom line

If the alternative is a 55-inch set at the same price, buy this and put a $200 soundbar under it. If the alternative is saving for six months, save for six months.

Buy the MacBook Air unless you have a specific, articulable reason not to. 'I don't like Apple' is a reason. It is just not a technical one.
