Tucker says

The bag flight crews buy with their own money, which is the only product endorsement I fully trust.

Why it wins

  • The wheels are replaceable and the warranty covers airline damage, which almost none do.
  • Soft-side expansion means it fits under the strict sizers and still swallows a fortnight.
  • The handle has no wobble, which sounds trivial until you've run through a terminal.

The catch

It is soft-side, so by year three it will look like it has had a life. It will still work.

Buy it if

  • You fly more than four times a year and refuse to check a bag.
  • You want to repair rather than replace.

Skip it if

  • You want something handsome above all — buy the Away and accept a tighter fit.
  • You only fly once a year, in which case a $90 bag is a perfectly rational purchase.

Where to buy

Price sheet · checked by hand

Live merchant destinations. The retailer page is authoritative for price and stock; automated observations never change an editorial verdict without human approval.

The sizing trap

'Carry-on' is not a standard. US domestic carriers are broadly generous, US budget carriers less so, and several European budget airlines operate sizers that a great many so-called carry-ons do not fit. A hard shell cannot be squeezed. A soft-side can.

The bottom line

Buy the Travelpro. If you fly mainly in the US and want the nicer object, the Away is defensible. If you fly Ryanair, measure twice.
