Steelcase Series 2: One Year In

The chair recommendation is easy to make and hard to verify. Here is what twelve months of actual sitting did to it.

Tucker says

Twelve months, roughly two thousand hours, one squeak. I would buy it again without hesitating.

Why it wins

  • Nothing has sagged, which is not a given in this price band.
  • The one squeak was a loose arm bolt and took ninety seconds to fix.
  • The fabric has not pilled at the front edge, where chairs usually go first.

The catch

The armrests still annoy me. They are the cheapest-feeling part of an otherwise serious object.

Buy it if

  • You want to know how it holds up rather than how it feels in a showroom.

Skip it if

  • You need a headrest — this model does not offer a good one.

What twelve months did to it

Office chair reviews are almost always written in the first fortnight, which is exactly the period in which every chair feels fine. The interesting questions arrive at month eight: has the foam taken a set, does the mechanism still hold its tension, has anything started to make a noise that you notice at 4pm.

The answers here are no, yes, and briefly. The seat foam has compressed slightly and stopped. The tilt tension is where it was. The squeak turned out to be an arm bolt that had backed off a quarter-turn, which is the sort of thing a chair with accessible fasteners lets you fix in the room rather than by shipping it somewhere.

The bottom line

The recommendation stands, with the same caveat it had a year ago: the arms are the weak point, and if you rest on them heavily you will notice.

Still the reference, and still overpriced new. Buy it refurbished and feel clever.

Better arms, worse price, unless you buy refurbished.

There is no correct smart fridge. Buy the dumb version of the same fridge and put a $12 whiteboard on it.
