Outdoor Research Foray 3

$229Best for most people

Tucker says

Full-length side zips, so you can ventilate instead of slowly marinating in your own weather.

Why it wins

  • Pit-to-hem zips that open the entire flank — the most effective ventilation design in production.
  • A hood that adjusts properly and does not collapse in wind.
  • Three-layer construction that survives a pack strap season after season.

The catch

The cut is generous. Size down if you want it to look trim.

Buy it if

  • You walk, hike or commute in genuinely wet weather.
  • You overheat easily, which is the problem this jacket is designed around.

Skip it if

  • You want a fashion shell — this is not one, and it does not pretend to be.
  • You need it twice a year, in which case $25 of Frogg Toggs is not a joke.

Where to buy

Price sheet · checked by hand

Waterproof and breathable is a spectrum

Every waterproof shell is a compromise between keeping water out and letting vapour escape, and no membrane on sale wins that argument outright when you are working hard. Once your output exceeds what the fabric can move, you get wet from the inside and the label stops mattering.

Which is why mechanical ventilation — zips you can open — beats membrane marketing in practice. The Foray's full-length side zips are the most useful feature in this entire category and they are not a headline spec anywhere.

The bottom line

Buy the Foray. Keep a Frogg Toggs in the car boot anyway; it weighs nothing and has saved more days out than it has any right to.
