The Best Electric Toothbrush

The good motor costs $79. Everything above that is dentistry-flavoured theatre.

Oral-B iO Series 3

$79Best for most people

Tucker says

This is the cheapest brush with the mechanism that matters. The $300 one has an app that congratulates you.

Why it wins

  • The iO magnetic drive at the bottom of the iO price ladder — the same motor, fewer novelties.
  • A pressure sensor that actually changes behaviour, which is the one smart feature with evidence behind it.
  • Two weeks of battery, so it survives a holiday without its charger.

The catch

Replacement heads are expensive and you will buy them forever. Factor roughly $40 a year.

Buy it if

  • You currently use a manual brush, or a cheap rotating one from 2014.

Skip it if

  • You want the cheapest thing that works, in which case the Sonicare 4100 is $44 and fine.
  • You are being sold a $299 model with an app. You are not the customer for that; nobody is.

Where to buy

Price sheet · checked by hand

Live merchant destinations. The retailer page is authoritative for price and stock; automated observations never change an editorial verdict without human approval.

The price ladder is the product

Toothbrush ranges are built as ladders: the same handful of motors distributed across a dozen price points, differentiated by travel cases, display screens, extra brushing modes with no clinical basis, and apps. The clinically meaningful features are a timer, a pressure sensor, and a head you replace on schedule.

The bottom line

Buy the iO Series 3 or the Sonicare 4100. Do not buy anything above $120 in this category without a specific instruction from an actual dentist.
