The Best Dash Cam

A dash cam that can't read a number plate at night is a very expensive clock.

Tucker says

It reads plates in the dark. That is the entire job, and most of them fail it.

Why it wins

  • Genuinely usable night footage, which is when the incidents you'll need footage of tend to happen.
  • Reliable parking mode with proper voltage cut-off, so it won't kill your battery.
  • Records to a standard card in a standard format you can actually hand to an insurer.

The catch

The companion app is clearly a firmware engineer's weekend project and behaves accordingly.

Buy it if

  • You drive daily, park on a street, or have ever been rear-ended by someone with a creative memory.

Skip it if

  • You want something invisible and simple more than you want the best footage — that's the Garmin.

Two weeks hands-on in a daily-driven car, including night driving in rain. We did not conduct controlled plate-legibility testing; those figures are published.

Where to buy

Price sheet · checked by hand

Live merchant destinations. The retailer page is authoritative for price and stock; automated observations never change an editorial verdict without human approval.

Why this won

Resolution is the number on the box and it is almost never the constraint. The constraint is sensor performance at night and how aggressively the camera compresses motion. A 4K dash cam with a small sensor and heavy compression produces a smeared, unusable plate; a well-tuned 2K one reads it cleanly.

The bottom line

Buy the Viofo and put up with the app. Buy the Garmin if you'd rather have something you install once and genuinely never touch.

Flat, pocketable, absurdly bright, and it will make you slightly insufferable at parties.
